In November of 2008, I made the decision to have weight loss surgery and had Gastric Bypass in August of 2009. After having my surgery I started walking with my dog. I eventually started following the couch to 5K program and entered my first 5K exactly one year to my weight loss surgery. Upon barely finishing my first 5K I started to wonder what it would be like to run a half marathon. I began to dream about finishing a half and I started researching Disney runs as I was told they were a great experience. Then in January, Erin Akey, mentioned that she would be putting a group together to go to Disney for the Wine and Dine and I quickly said to count me in. Training for the Wine and Dine not only led to time for reflection while running the countryside around home, but running the actual Wine and Dine brought a great sense of accomplishment. I am certainly not your typical runner, but I have been able to use Jeff Galloway’s run/ walk method, which has allowed me to cover more miles on foot than I ever dreamed about. At the finish line a flood of emotions came over me, from joy to pride to disappointment that it was over to thankfulness for all who had supported me. Coming from a girl who thought the only reason to run was because you were being chased and it was life or death, the thrill of completing endurance events cannot be measured. I look forward to my next Disney race and plan to go for a Coast to Coast in 2013 and a Goofy in 2014!

"Erin please allow me to thank you for holding this class today. I got just what I came to get from it. I am one year out from my surgery with a loss of 88 pounds. I feel so great without that 88 pounds on my body. But with all of my success I have been so down on myself and my body image. I leave here today loving my new body for what it is and I never want to go back to where I came from. With still wanting to get down 30 more pounds, if I do not meet that goal i do feel now that i can love myself for what and who I am as is today.
